The Land Trust of North Alabama, founded in 1987 as Alabama’s first land trust, grew out of a community-led effort to protect the western slopes of Monte Sano from development. What began with the preservation of 547 acres has expanded into more than 10,000 acres across seven counties, safeguarding critical habitats, rare and endangered species, and the region’s natural heritage. With over 80 miles of public trails, the Land Trust provides spaces for recreation, research, and environmental education while ensuring these lands remain permanently protected. Now a nationally accredited conservation land trust, it continues to preserve the natural character of North Alabama, enriching quality of life for residents and fostering a lasting connection to the outdoors.

The Alabama Scenic River Trail (ASRT) offers a wide range of programs to promote safe, accessible, and enjoyable paddling across Alabama’s waterways. Through summer paddling trips, skill-building adventures, and community-led initiatives, ASRT works with outfitters, Trail Angels, and local partners to help more people explore the state’s rivers. Programs like the Waterway Enhancement Program fund local projects that improve access, safety, and education, while efforts like the Mile Marker Program and River Kids ensure paddlers of all ages can enjoy the water with confidence. ASRT also supports a network of designated campsites, river signage, and paddler resources across the state—all aimed at strengthening Alabama’s water recreation culture and connecting people to the outdoors.
