[Update at bottom of post] While kayaking along the Buffalo River in Wayne County, Tennessee, I took a break to enjoy the surroundings. It was then that I noticed an unusual hawk perched nearby. Curious, I took some photos and a video to try to identify it.
I reached out to the birdwatching community for help in figuring out what kind of bird this was. After getting feedback from various people, it seems that the hawk might be a juvenile or female Snail Kite (the species has since been confirmed by an expert from the Tropical Audubon Society), an endangered species typically found only in South Florida (and in some Central and South American countries). This identification has stirred quite a bit of excitement.
Responding to the interest, I’ve posted the sighting on eBird [https://ebird.org/checklist/S182779742], and I’m sharing the video below for everyone to see. It’s not every day you find a South Florida bird in Tennessee!
Hope you find this as fascinating as I did!

[Update] The next day, June 20, 2024, after sharing this story with a few birding groups online, people near the area went out to try to get a picture themselves. Thankfully, they were successful, because the Snail Kite was not in very good shape. We are still unclear on how or why it ended up near Waynesboro, TN. Considering that the Snail Kite's diet mainly consists of freshwater apple snails, typically found in tropical areas, the bird may have been on the verge of starvation. It was found sitting on the bank of the Buffalo River with its head tucked down into its wing. The kite was captured and brought downriver, then transported by truck to a wildlife rehabber near Nashville, TN. I've emailed the rehabber to find out the status of the kite, but I haven't heard back yet.

As a final update to this story -- unfortunately, the Snail Kite died while it was in the care of the rehabber. However, I feel that the story of this rare Snail Kite serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways nature can surprise and connect us. While its journey ended far from home, the discovery brought together a community of enthusiasts eager to learn and help. It’s a testament to the importance of paying attention to our local ecosystems and supporting wildlife conservation efforts. We’re reminded to stay curious and engaged with the natural world, as you never know what you might find along your next adventure.
